They say that strange things bring people together, but who could have ever foreseen that one of the most creative and expressive companies in the Pacific Northwest could be sourced back to a stuffing machine? Well, that’s exactly how Steven Jones and Alexa Rivera first entered the world of professional balloon decorating…after they both purchased a specialty tool designed to insert gifts inside of latex balloons.
Before that could happen though, there were a few obstacles in the way. While Steve was developing his business in the Midwest in Cincinnati, Ohio, Alexa was growing hers in her native town of the Bronx, New York. Steven focused heavily on large impact sculptures and installations for corporate clients while Alexa specialized in the more every day celebrations of weddings, baby showers and the like.
Oh, but there was one other problem….neither one knew the other existed!
The two worked independently for years, but as fate would have it, the two came face to face at a balloon decor class in Brooklyn in the summer of 2007. A friendship formed soon after based on mutual respect for one another both as talented artists as well as hard working business people striving to improve the lives of themselves and their loved ones.
In 2010, Steven relocated to the Seattle area and changed his company name to Balloon Designers. As the business grew, Alexa would often travel to the Emerald City to assist him with larger events and installations. The two even traveled together to Phoenix when the Seattle Seahawks needed balloon decorations at Super Bowl XXXXIX.
But something was missing. While Steve had secured a large number of corporate clients including the Seahawks, Mariners, Microsoft, Amazon and others, the business was failing to connect with the every day person.
It needed someone with a softer touch, someone who could ease the minds of the nervous brides and share in the joy of the excitedly expectant mothers. Balloon Designers needed someone who understood the needs of the single parent trying to provide a special day for their three-year old as well as the family of the couple celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary.
There was no question….Balloon Designers needed a private event specialist. In other words, it needed Alexa.
So in 2016, Alexa Rivera packed her bags and moved to Seattle where she and Steven now run the company as a team. Under the principles of equality, strength and commitment, the two now work side by side to bring Western Washington the most dynamic and impactful balloon decorations and sculptures the region has ever seen. Whether your event is hosting five guests or 5000, the two work to create custom balloon decor packages with their clients’ tastes, styles and budgets in mind.
Those stuffing machines mostly collect a lot of dust these days, but for Steve and Alexa they’ll always serve as a reminder of how such a unique niche industry brought together two of the best of friends.
